A 17-year-old girl was swimming by the shipping pier at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Florida on Friday when she spotted a shark struggling to free itself from the rocks. Apparently it had become entangled in fishing line.
While attempting to rescue the shark, it sucked the teen’s fingers into its mouth biting down.
The girl was able to free the shark and carry it to shore while her right hand fingers still in its mouth.
On the beach a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy used his baton to pry open the shark’s mouth releasing the girls hand.
Ivone Anderson told WSVN.com “It looked like somebody was holding a turtle; we thought about a sea turtle, and it wasn’t a sea turtle, As I took a picture, I realized it was a shark.”
Paramedics arrived and treated the injury and the young lady refused to go to the hospital.
This is the thirtieth shark bite attack of 2015, six of which were fatal and two of which were out of water (normally fisherman bitten by their catch).*
The location has been marked on the 2015 shark attack bites tracking map.
*The information is based on reported shark bites attacks. It is possible the number could be higher as the incidents are not reported or have been slow to reach the US.
